Whitening With Dental Guidance

01 · In office

In-Office Teeth Whitening

A dental professional applies a professional-strength whitening gel directly to the surfaces of your teeth. The complete visit generally takes about 90 minutes, and you will be able to see results immediately.

This is often a good choice when you want a noticeable change in a single appointment. We carefully monitor the process and your comfort throughout treatment.

02 · At home

Custom Tray Whitening

Tray whitening uses custom-fitted trays and professional whitening gel available through your dentist. The close fit helps the gel contact your natural teeth evenly instead of treating only the front surfaces reached by a strip.

As the peroxide gel breaks down, it helps lift stains from the teeth. A typical course takes 10 to 14 days, although some patients notice a change in as little as three to five days.

Over-the-counter choices

How Store-Bought Products Differ

Over-the-counter products can be convenient and less expensive, but their strength, fit, and results differ from professionally supervised whitening. Follow the product directions and ask us before use if you are unsure whether an option is appropriate for you.

01

Paint-On Teeth Whiteners

A small brush applies whitening gel directly to the teeth. The gel hardens into a thin film and gradually dissolves in the mouth. Paint-on products are readily available and generally cost less, but they also tend to be less effective than strips or professional whitening.

02

Teeth-Whitening Strips

These thin, flexible plastic strips have a layer of hydrogen peroxide on one side. Separate strips are placed over the upper and lower teeth and gently pressed into contact. Many products are worn for about 30 minutes twice a day, though treatment time varies by brand.

03

Whitening Toothpaste and Mouthwash

These are usually the least expensive options. Mild abrasives help remove surface stains, but unlike professional whitening materials, they do not lighten the tooth’s underlying color. The result is typically a mild improvement in surface brightness.

The safest place to start is a dental exam. We can confirm that your teeth and gums are healthy, identify which type of staining is present, and recommend the most effective option for the result you want.
