Oral Cancer Screening
Our office is not only dedicated to your smile — we're also dedicated to your overall wellness. We take a holistic approach to your dental care, which includes an oral cancer screening as part of your regular exam. Like many kinds of cancer, oral cancer can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early.
Common Symptoms of Oral Cancer
- Red or white spots or sores anywhere in the oral cavity
- A sore that bleeds easily or does not heal within two weeks
- A lump, thickening, or rough spot
- Pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on the lips
- Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving the jaw or tongue
These symptoms can have causes other than cancer, but a persistent or unexplained change should be evaluated rather than watched indefinitely.
The Screening Process
The screening examines the entire oral cavity, not only the teeth. It is a simple part of a comprehensive dental visit and usually takes only a few minutes.
Protecting Your Oral Health
- Avoid tobacco products in every form
- Drink alcohol only in moderation
- Maintain a healthy, balanced diet
- Protect your lips from prolonged sun exposure with UV protection
Screening does not replace a diagnosis, but noticing a suspicious change early can allow the appropriate next step to happen sooner.
